WATERTOWN, S.D.–The purchase of a new armored car for the Watertown Police Department will undergo further scrutiny next month.

Last week, the Watertown City Council approved a motion allowing the city manager to sign a purchase order for it.

The budgeted amount for the armored car was $280,000, but the price could end up being some $72,000 above that amount.

The purchase has been criticized by the public in terms of the need for it, and its cost.

City Manager Amanda Mack explains why the city council is choosing to revisit the purchase…

The Watertown PD already has an armored car, but it’s one that was donated to them a decade ago, has high mileage, and is nearing the end of its life expectancy.

The city council will revisit the issue at their February February 5th meeting.
