Post 17 Junior Legion season ends; Grey Sox take home state championship

MITCHELL, S.D. (GoWatertown.net) — Watertown Post 17’s Junior Legion season came to an end over the weekend at the Class A Region Tournament.
On Friday, Watertown would down Aberdeen 5-4 to open up region play. Cole Holden and Braedon Zaug would each collect one hit and two RBI’s in the game. Zaug would also pitch five and two-thirds innings for 104 pitches, eight hits, four runs, three earned, three strikeouts and four walks.
Watertown would move on the championship side of the bracket and faced Renner also on Friday. Despite Watertown putting down three hits in the game, Renner would blank Post 17 Junior Legion 2-0. Andrew Czech would pitch six innings for 72 pitches, one hit, two runs, four strikeouts, and issue one walk.
That would put Watertown on the losers side of the bracket where they would face Mitchell on Saturday. Mitchell would drop down 12 hits in the game en route to a 6-1 victory. Kolby Lacher would collect the lone Watertown RBI in the game. Jack Heesch pitched six innings for 89 pitches, nine hits, three runs, five strikeouts and issued three walks.
Watertown Post 17 Junior Legion ends their season with a record of 18-24-1.
At the 16 and under State A Tournament, Renner would down the Watertown Red Sox 6-1 on Friday. The Red Sox would come back to defeat Rapid City Post 320 on Saturday 12-3 and would rally to down Yankton on Sunday 9-8. The Red Sox end their year with a record of 13-26.
The Watertown Black Sox would open the 14-15 State A Legion Tournament on Friday with a 14-1 loss to Renner and a 9-2 loss to Yankton. The Black Sox would close out their season Saturday with an 8-1 win over Brandon Valley to end their year 12-23-1.
The Watertown Grey Sox would take home the Class A 13 and Under Championship over the weekend. The Grey Sox would take a 12-2 win over Sioux Falls West and a 10-0 win over Sioux Falls East on Saturday. On Sunday Watertown would down Brandon Valley in the semifinals 6-1 and dominate Yankton in the championship game 14-1. The Grey Sox end their year with a record of 28-6.
The Watertown White Sox would go 1-2 at the 13-14 Class A Baseball Tournament at Watertown Stadium, falling to Pierre 8-1 on Friday and on Saturday downing Harrisburg 10-3 and falling to Brandon Valley 11-8 to end their year at 16-16.
Tonight Watertown Post 17 Senior Legion will face the defending South Dakota Champion Renner to try to earn their birth at the Class A Tournament to be held this weekend.
Game times at 4 and 6 p.m. in a best of three series. If a game three is needed, it will be played Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Games will be broadcast on The Talk of Watertown 1480 KSDR with video at GoWatertown.net/Post17.
In their only match-up this season, Renner downed Watertown 10-0 on July 10th at Renner.
In other second-round games across the state tonight (Monday), number one Rapid City Post 22 will face number ten Rapid City Post 320, he two seed Brandon Valley will take on the eight seed Mitchell and the four seed Pierre will face the five seed Harrisburg.
