LAKE CITY, S.D.–The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed a popular summer event in northeast South Dakota.

The staff at Fort Sisseton has announced their 2020 Historical Festival has been cancelled.

“We had initially hoped to simply just postpone this year’s event until a later date,” said Fort Sisseton park manager, Ali Tonsfeldt. “However, it takes months, nearly a year, to plan, book, and properly host the annual Historical Festival. Since there’s currently no indication of when it will be safe to host a large public event, we are not able to confidently select an alternative date for 2020 that does not carry the same risk of cancellation and lasting financial impact to our organizations.” We appreciate the support and understanding.”

Plans for fall events such as the Harvest Festival and Haunted Fort remain on the calendar.
