VERMILLION, S.D. (GoWatertown.net) —

Eric Peterson was introduced as the new men’s basketball coach at the University of South Dakota last week.

Peterson returns to the Coyotes after serving as an assistant to former USD head coach Craig Smith for four seasons from 2014-18. Peterson has remained on Smith’s staff through three seasons at Utah State and this past season at Utah.

South Dakota athletic director David Herbster says Peterson checked all the boxes in the characteristics they were searching for in the next basketball coach:

Peterson was instrumental in the Coyotes’ first Summit League title during the 2016-2017 season. He says he wants to return to a defensive style of play:

Peterson also says he wants to recruit guys who can compete:

Peterson wants to take the recruiting back to the midwest:

Peterson replaces Todd Lee who was let go on March 10th after four years with the program with a 66-52 record and a 39-26 mark in the Summit.
