North Dakota man who says he was sleepwalking rescued from lake ice

VALLEY CITY, N.D.(KFGO)–First responders rescued a man yelling for help on Lake Ashtabula north of Valley City Tuesday around 8:30 a.m.

Barnes County Sheriff’s Deputies along with a U.S. Army Corp of Engineer Ranger, Dazey, N.D. Fire Department, and the Barnes County Ambulance Service responded to the call

Arriving on scene, a Corp of Engineer Ranger and Sheriff’s Deputies saw a Barnes County man about 100 yards from shore sitting on the ice wearing a t-shirt, blue jeans, and no shoes.

A Corp of Engineers Ranger and Sheriff’s Deputies with the aid of safety equipment retrieved the man off the ice. The man was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Valley City for non-life-threatening injuries.

The man told Sheriff’s Deputies and First responders on the scene he was sleepwalking. A female friend, who lives with him told Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin that he had left his residence several hours prior to being rescued from the lake ice.
