Nominations sought for Watertown Yard of the Month

UNDATED (News Release) — The watering cans are back!! – so nominations are now being taken for the H20-20 Keeping Watertown Beautiful annual “Yard of the Month” competition.
The goal of the Yard of the Month Award is to recognize the efforts of Watertown residents who take pride in their home and its landscaping and inspire others to do the same. Businesses will also be eligible to participate. Five homes, one from each ward, one business, and one whimsical yard will be selected each month this summer.
To be considered for the award, a committee made up of volunteer master gardeners and citizens will look to see if the yard is well-groomed and attractive and if buildings, fences, porches, and patios on the property are in good repair. Extra consideration may be given to properties that have invested extra effort through the use of attractive art pieces such as pottery, ironwork, potted plants, birdhouses, patio or lawn furniture, windsocks, or decorative mailboxes. The yard is to be free of litter, junk and debris, junked or inoperable vehicles. House numbers/business signage is displayed attractively, and the property must have “passerby” appeal that shows the business/homeowner has pride in their landscape and property.
Please note that the number of nominations does not determine the winner. Each nomination submitted is given a drive by judging.
To nominate a yard for the Yard of the Month, you simply need to fill out a form provided at each of the nomination drop boxes and give your nominee’s information. The information needed is: Name of the person(s) who owns the property, full address of the property, Ward property is in, the nominee’s phone number, and e-mail (if known).
Citizens can nominate their own yard as well. Then simply drop the form into one of the conveniently located Yard of the Month drop boxes – watering cans. The drop box watering cans are located at County Fair Foods, HyVee, and the Watertown Regional Library.
Winners of the Yard of the Month will receive a specially designed “Yard of the Month” sign placed in their front yard for one month, a certificate of recognition signed by the Mayor, acknowledgement on the City of Watertown website, Watertown H20-20 Facebook page, and on Watertown Radio.
So get out there and nominate! Let’s continue this fun way to recognize and encourage citizens and businesses that maintain their yards and make Watertown a more attractive city to both residents and visitors! Keep Watertown Beautiful!!
