PIERRE, S.D.–A powerful winter storm sweeping through the upper Midwest today has already shut down a portion of Interstate 90 in South Dakota and kept state government workers home for the day.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) closed I-90, both east and westbound, from Chamberlain to Rapid City at 10 o’clock Central Time this morning.

The SDDOT will be monitoring weather conditions through the day, and warned that I-90 from Chamberlain to Mitchell, and from Rapid City to the Wyoming line may have to close too.

KWAT News talked with Governor Kristi Noem about the storm and the preparations people should take, and about  last week’s budget speech to lawmakers in which she repeated her desire to cut the state sales tax on groceries.
