PIERRE, S.D.–South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has been asked many times over the past eleven months about her refusal to issue a statewide mask mandate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The governor holds weekly press conferences during the legislative session, and the issue came up again last week.

Governor Noem says some states where mask mandates are in place, like Arizona, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, continue to see rising infections, while South Dakota’s numbers peaked in mid-November…

The South Dakota Department of Health reported 2,883 active cases of COVID-19 in South Dakota as of Sunday.

In mid-November, active cases surpassed 19,200.
