WATERTOWN, S.D.–It’s been a tumultuous year for the school lunch program in the Watertown School District.

There have been complaints from kids and parents about the kind of food that’s been served, the portion sizes, inconsistencies with the school menu, and school lunch staff who’ve simply quit and walked away from their jobs.

It all came to a head Monday night when the Watertown School Board accepted the resignation of the woman in charge of the district’s school lunch program…

That’s Superintendent Dr. Jeff Danielsen.

The resignation was accepted by the board unanimously.

Danielsen says it’s time for the district to move forward, and to try and make things better…

Danielsen is asking for patience as the school district essentially hits the re-set button on their lunch program….

School Board member Stuart Stein (pictured) read from a prepared statement…

Lakeya Maddox was hired last spring to replace the retiring Scott Wahl. The Maryland native had previously worked as nutrition manager at a charter school in Charlotte, North Carolina for four years.

The school district will move immediately to hire an assistant nutrition director, and hopes to get Maddox’s position filled by the time she leaves at the end of January.
