NEW: Ten more deaths in South Dakota from COVID-19 as numbers spike

WATERTOWN, S.D.—The COVID-19 pandemic is roughly seven months old in South Dakota, and the state is seeing numbers today that are unprecedented.

The South Dakota Health Department reports 609 new cases in just the past 24 hours.

Active cases in South Dakota, which were at 4,179 on Tuesday, jumped to 4,511 today.

Hospitalizations are the highest they’ve been since the pandemic started, at 273.

Ten more deaths tied to COVID-19 are being reported in South Dakota today, bringing the death toll to 258.

Two of those most recent deaths were recorded in Codington County, where the death toll now stands at nine, and the active case count is 178.
