NEW: Man in custody in Wessington Springs homicide

WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D.–Authorities say a homicide investigation is underway in a small community in eastern South Dakota.

The Jerauld County State’s Attorney on Sunday confirmed the homicide investigation in Wessington Springs involves one victim and that a suspect is in custody.

In a series of tweets on social media, the South Dakota Division of Criminal investigation said during the early morning hours Sunday, law enforcement responded to a Wessington Springs residence following reports of a barricaded subject/ hostage situation which stemmed from an alleged fatal shooting inside the residence.

Through a coordinated multi-agency effort encompassing the Jerauld Co. Sheriff,  Huron Police, Sanborn Co. Sheriff, South Dakota DCI, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol, a female subject was safely released from the residence, while a suspect identified as Mitch Caffee peacefully surrendered himself.

Caffee was subsequently arrested by DCI Special Agents on charges including First Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping and Burglary. He remains in custody on a one million dollar cash-only bond. DCI continues to investigate the incident.

No details about the victim have been released.
