WATERTOWN, S.D.–It appears the city of Watertown has identified property that could become the new home of a Street Department headquarters.

At tonight’s city council meeting, the council will vote on whether to purchase the land on which the South Dakota Livestock Sale Barn on South Dakota Highway 20 was located. The property is adjacent to the Codington County Highway Department shop.

The livestock barn burned to the ground in an August 2015 fire.

A real estate purchase agreement indicates the purchase price, if approved by the council, will be $1.2 million.

The current Street Department headquarters on Arrow Avenue (pictured)  is too small to store all of the department’s plows, trucks and other equipment, and the building isn’t insulated to protect equipment from weather elements.

The city has budgeted $7.5 million for a new Street Department building.
