WATERTOWN, S.D.–Codington County Sheriff Brad Howell says 72,083 people went through a security screening booth as they entered the county courthouse last year.

The sheriff tells KWAT News nearly 1,000 items that could be used as weapons were confiscated…..

The sheriff says most of those items were retained by the people who brought them–but after they were returned to the vehicles they arrived in..

The sheriff says security checkpoints at government buildings are becoming the norm…

Howell says for the year, there were an average of 356 people screened each day the courthouse was open, although on some days, that number reached nearly 800.
