WATERTOWN, S.D.—With COVID-19 cases rising across Codington County, there was continued discussion at Monday night’s Watertown City Council meeting about the benefits of wearing facemasks during the pandemic, and whether they should be made mandatory.

Here’s what a masked Mayor Sarah Caron had to say…..

Caron asked the council if they’d be willing to spend up to $5,000 on a social media advertising campaign that would feature city leaders in Watertown wearing face coverings and talking about their importance.

The motion passed on an 8-1 vote. The lone holdout was Coundilman Ried Holien….

The ad campaign would be paid for with CARES Act funding, if the federal government agrees to that. Word on that approval should come by the end of this week.

There were 287 active cases of COVID-19 in Codington County as of Monday.
