WATERTOWN, S.D.–In a copyright story, KWAT News has learned Sanford Health has positioned itself to make a major move into Watertown in the future.

Documents obtained by KWAT News confirm the medical provider has purchased just under 10 acres of land (pictured) for approximately $3.5 million.

Those documents filed with the Codington County Register of Deeds office show the land in question is located just north of Trav’s Outfitter between 8th Avenue Southeast and Willow Creek Drive.

The real estate was bought in early January by a limited liability company known as DG Developments 2 L.L.C., which in turn transferred it to Sanford at no cost.

The land was previously owned by HCE Properties L.L.C. and Co-Ho Incorporated.

The legal description of the land purchased is Lots 2,3 and 4 of East Park Second Addition, and Lots 1 and 2 in Block 3 of Morris First Addition.

There’s speculation that this could be a precursor to Sanford eventually building a hospital on that site, but a Sanford official says that’s not the case, at least not yet.

Here’s what Cindy Mydland, Director of Sanford Health Watertown Clinic told KWAT News in an emailed statement:

“Sanford Health continues to invest in the communities it serves by providing convenient care close to home. Sanford recently purchased land in the eastern part of Watertown. As the community of Watertown continues to grow, we want to ensure we are there for our patients by providing excellent access to health care. As of today, we have no immediate plans for the land and continue to look at ways to best serve Watertown and the surrounding communities.”

Sanford Health is a non-profit health care provider headquartered in Sioux Falls, with additional offices in Fargo and Bismarck, North Dakota, and Bemidji, Minnesota.
