Kirk Cousins out, Sam Darnold in at quarterback for Minnesota Vikings

March 12, 2024

The free agency signing period in the National Football League opened Monday morning, and with it came a much clearer picture of who might be under center when the Minnesota Vikings open the 2024 season.

Free agent Kirk Cousins wasted no time in agreeing to a four year contract with the Atlanta Falcons for $180 million.

Cousins is coming off a season in which he tore his Achilles tendon, causing him to miss significant playing time due to injury for the first time in his career.

Late Monday, the Vikings made a move to replace Cousins by agreeing on a one year, $10 million contract with Sam Darnold.

Darnold, a former third overall pick in the NFL Draft, spent last season backing up San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy. Before that, Darnold spent time with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers.

Darnold could serve in a back up capacity in Minnesota if the Vikings choose a quarterback in next month’s NFL Draft.
