SIOUX FALLS, S.D.–It’s been over a week since unrest broke out at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.

Attorney General Marty Jackley said he requested the Department of Criminal Investigation to look into the unrest at the penitentiary and added that there are currently ongoing conversations happening with both correctional officers and inmates.

Jackley said, “if there was an assault on a correctional officer or an inmate, those will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. As well as if there was any property damage, which there was some level of property damage that will need to be addressed also as part of that investigation.”

Jackley also discussed details surrounding Thursday’s officer-involved shooting at a business in the northwestern part of Sioux Falls.

He said officers were on the scene serving a warrant for a mental hold and the events unfolded over the next half hour.

The suspect was carrying two knives at the time of the incident, and was hospitalized for surgery after being shot three times.
