WATERTOWN, S.D.—Codington County Sheriff Brad Howell is asking for an additional deputy that would be paid, at least partially, with funds from a federal grant.

Howell went before the county commission this morning seeking permission to apply for a U.S. Department of Justice Cops Grant, which would pay for 75-percent of a new deputy’s wages and benefits for three years.

The sheriff says the last time Codington County added a deputy to its staff was in 2010, and that was done through a Cops Grant as well.

Recent data shows the sheriff’s department responded to more than 7,100 calls for service in 2019, compared to just under 6,400 in 2018.
