Howell exploring school resource officer for Codington County’s rural schools (Audio)

WATERTOWN, S.D.–Codington County Sheriff Brad Howell says there have been preliminary discussions about hiring an additional deputy for his department that would serve as a school resource officer, rotating between the Henry, Florence and Waverly-South Shore School Districts.
Howell tells KWAT News preliminary talks have involved each school district and the county, splitting equally four ways, the cost of what would be a new position on the county’s payroll….
None of the three school districts in rural Codington County have a school resource officer now…
Howell says each school board, along with the Codington County Commission, would need to approve of the idea.
He says if that happens, it wouldn’t be rolled out until the fall of 2023 at the earliest.
