Highway Patrol: Two people die from injuries in head-on crash on U.S. Highway 81

FREEMAN, S.D. – Two Norfolk, Nebraska residents have died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash on September 11th, five miles north of Freeman, South Dakota.

The Highway Patrol says a pickup, which was pulling an empty horse trailer, was northbound on U.S. Highway 81 when it attempted to pass a semi. The pickup and trailer collided head-on with an oncoming car.

Both occupants of the car were airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital. The driver, 75-year-old Albert Wingate, died this past Saturday. The passenger, 74-year-old Marilyn Wingate, died on Monday.

The pickup was driven by 28 year-old Jacob Langland of Lake Preston. He sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Freeman hospital.
