First construction bid awarded on Watertown’s ice arena project  (Audio)

WATERTOWN, S.D.–Another milestone was reached Monday night in the long awaited construction of a new ice arena in Watertown.

The city council approved the first construction bid on the project.

The $416,000 amount is for engineered shop drawings and design for a number of construction items in the bid package, including precast walls, precast bleachers, steel fabrication and roofing materials.

Dick Strasburg of the Tegra Group is working with the city as a consultant on the ice arena project….

The bid package includes locker room space for a junior hockey team from the North American Hockey League that will call Watertown’s new ice arena, “home.”

The council approved a letter of intent with the league Monday night to bring a team to Watertown.

The two-sheet ice arena will have seating capacity of 1,250 for the main rink, which will be frozen about 10 months of the year, and a second rink that will be frozen for six months of the year, leaving it open for other events such as trade shows and meetings.

It’ll be built off Willow Creek Drive, north of Hobby Lobby.
