WATERTOWN, S.D. (GoWatertown.net) — The South Dakota High School Activities Association approved the sanctioning of the sport of softball as a girls’ varsity sport at their meeting on November 3rd.
The process of sanctioning softball has been a long time coming as South Dakota is the final state in the U.S. to bring the sport into the high school varsity ranks. Watertown Athletic Director Craig Boyens says it’s a huge win for the state:

The SDHSAA tabled a discussion to their January 2022 meeting on the issue of softball being a fall, spring, or a split fall and spring season. Gary Young, President of USA Softball of South Dakota, sat on the steering committee over the summer that recommended the sanctioning of softball tells us when we can see the sport become a varsity program in the state:
