WATERTOWN, S.D.–Law enforcement officers from different agencies across eastern South Dakota are in Watertown today for Fentanyl Awareness Training.

Fentanyl is a highly potent synthetic opioid that is sometimes used for anesthesia, but it’s also used recretationally, sometimes leading to drug overdose deaths.
Codington County Chief Deputy Sheriff Brent Solum says they’re seeing the drug in this area…

Today, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, DCI, and the Sioux Falls Drug Task Force will be conducting the training on what police need to know about the drug…

Solum says in some cases, the drug is pressed into a shape and color that mimics candy, making it attractive to children.

Today’s training was  being held at the Codington County Extension Center from 2-5 p.m.
