WATERTOWN, S.D.–Codington County District 2 Commissioner Charlie Waterman introduced a resolution this week that would have stopped all discussions on building a new county jail, or remodeling the existing one.

Waterman says given the tight budget situation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, now is not the time to even be discussing such an expensive project.

Waterman’s election day opponent Tuesday is Jim Didier. KWAT News asked him if he would support Waterman’s idea of shutting down any and all talk of a new or remodeled jail…..

Waterman withdrew his resolution before it could be voted on, but says he’ll bring it back for consideration at a future meeting.

Two proposals to build a new county jail have been presented to voters. Both were defeated.
