FLORENCE, S.D.–There will be a contested Republican primary for a northeastern South Dakota Senate seat next year.

Representative Fred Deutsch (pictured) of Florence announced today he will seek the Senate seat in District 4 that’s now held by the term-limited John Wiik of Big Stone City.

In announcing his candidacy, Deutsch said, “I am running because I believe it’s important we protect our way of life, give hope to moms and dads, and leave this world a better place for our kids.”

Also seeking the District 4 Senate seat is fellow Republican Stephanie Sauder of Bryant.

Sauder is a first term lawmaker in the House of Representatives.
