Crashes near Mitchell, Freeman claim two lives

MITCHELL, S.D.–One man died Saturday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Davison County, one mile south of Mitchell.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a car was stopped or nearly stopped in the southbound lane of Highway 37 near mile marker 71. A pickup truck was also southbound at the same location. The two vehicles collided in the southbound lane. The car came to rest in the west ditch. The truck came to rest in the east ditch.

The driver of the car died at the scene.

Meanwhile, One person died on Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash in Hutchinson County, five miles north of Freeman.

According to authorities, a vehicle was traveling west on 273rd Street near US Highway 81. The stretch of road transitioned from pavement to gravel in that area, and the driver lost control of the vehicle and rolled. The 17-year-old female driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was dead at the scene.

The names of the victims in both crashes were being withheld pending notification of relatives.
