WATERTOWN, S.D.–Nothing is official yet, but Codington County residents could be voting for a third time on a bond issue to fund construction of a new jail.

Previous bond votes in 2014 and 2017 both failed; the latter vote being defeated by just a 72 vote margin.

County Commissioner Lee Gabel says an RFP, or request for proposals, has been sent out to architectual firms that would be interested in working with the county on what a new or remodeled county jail could look like….

Gabel talks about what commissioners are looking for in whoever they might choose to work with…..

Gabel says a new jail might not need to be as big as the current one, but it does need to be more modern to increase safety for the correctional officers who work there….

Sheriff Brad Howell says there have been four instances this year where correctional officers at the jail have been assaulted by inmates, which spells out the need for a modern facility that includes more line-of-sight safety for staff.

The RFP’s are due in to the county commission by January 17th.
