BRUCE, S.D.–Harvest time in the fall can bring with it an increased danger of fires during fieldwork.

Malfunctioning equipment, hot bearings or just a small spark can ignite a dry, dusty corn or soybean field that’s being combined.

That’s what happened Friday afternoon in a field along 203rd Street on the edge of Bruce.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Department says a farmer was combining soybeans when they noticed a warning light activate, and discovered flames coming from the rear of the combine.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the flames, but not before the combine sustained an estimated $10,000 damage.
