WATERTOWN, S.D.–Watertown Fire Rescue responded to three grass fires Wednesday. The first fire, north of Watertown, was a prescribed burn that a passerby had called in to dispatch as an out of control fire.
Crews responded but the fire had been extinguished prior to their arrival.
The second fire, located in the 2700 block of 14th Ave NE, had been started by young men lighting fireworks.
Upon arrival crews found burned areas in the ditch on both sides of the road, with active fire on the north side of 14th Ave.
Crews quickly extinguished the remaining fire and mopped up any hotspots found in the burn area.
Watertown Fire Rescue responded to third grass fire in the evening. A grass fire was reported on Grover Street in rural Codington County.
When crews arrived on scene they found fire moving towards a pine belt with bystanders attempting to put out the fire. The brush trucks made quick work of the fire getting knockdown within minutes of arriving on scene.
The fire appeared to have been started by a burn pit that escaped it’s boundaries.
