SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter in Sioux Falls for residents who are displaced after a powerful tornado tore through the city last night.
Gretchen Hjelmstad is the chief communications director for Red Cross in the Dakotas…..
The tornado struck Sioux Falls a little before midnight. Hjelmstad says Red Cross got the call that their help was needed early this morning….
The shelter will stay open as long as people need a place to stay….
The storm damaged or destroyed at least 37 buildings in Sioux Falls, and knocked out power to thousands of people.
Some injuries have been reported, but no fatalities.
Hjelmstad says people who want to help with the clean up effort in Sioux Falls are asked to call 2-1-1.
