SD Senate approves Rep. Deutsch’s transgender bathroom bill

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – South Dakota’s governor could make the state the first in the U.S. to approve a law that would require transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their sex at birth.

The state Senate approved the bill Tuesday. The primary sponsor was Republican Representative Fred Deutsch of Florence (pictured).

It now goes to Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard, who has responded positively to the measure but said he would need to study it more before making a decision.

Advocates say the bill is meant to protect the privacy of students, but opponents of the bill say it’s discriminatory.

Under the bill, schools would have to provide a “reasonable accommodation” for transgender students, such as a single-occupancy bathroom or the “controlled use” of a staff-designated restroom, locker room or shower room.

Whether you support passing this law or not …. think about this. If we have separate bathrooms and locker room space set aside for transgender students, do you honestly think any transgender student would use them? Would any transgender student really want to single themselves out and put themselves at risk for being mocked & bullied? Do we really need a law for “reasonable accommodations” and who is pushing for this anyway? I bet it’s not students … much more likely it’s liberals with their precious politically correct agenda.

Sorry Lola, but it wasn’t liberals pushing this bill. It was ALEC(American Legislative Exchange Council) and their lackey Fred Deutsch. The idea was to provide a diversion to waste the legislature’s time so that there would be no time to work on Medicaid expansion, and that’s exactly what happened. Deutsch is ultra-conservative and wants to kill Obamacare in South Dakota. This cynical tactic was a great way to do that while taking a cheap shot at alternative lifestyle youth.
